The first dance – learn wedding waltz

Perfect first wedding dance

Especially the bride often dreams of the perfect first wedding dance and always imagines this special moment extremely romantic and magical.
But then comes the reality, which is no longer quite so magical!

The science of wedding dance

If the bride and groom do not take the time to learn a wedding waltz (which is often necessary, as many people are born with an inability to dance), it can happen that the first wedding dance does not even take place but, to save themselves the embarrassment, is omitted.
This raises the question: How did that work out for our grandparents or parents?

Wedding waltz

They all finally got through the first wedding waltz and it doesn’t look embarrassing or awkward in the photos.
In her time, however, couple dancing was also taught at school and dances were held on special occasions, e.g. school balls. Thus, everyone can dance at least one waltz.
However, our generation was not allowed to experience this, because we prefer to move to rhythmic bass instead of classical dance music.
But if you still want to dance a great waltz at your wedding and keep this beautiful tradition, you should invest some hours in “training”…

This brings us to the first mistake:

Too little preparation time

Whoever thinks it is wiser to start dance training one or two weeks before the wedding ceremony and justifies this with the excuse that otherwise one would forget the important and complicated steps, will hardly be able to convince the guests of his dancing skills. It is recommended to take some dance lessons 3 to 4 months before the ceremony if you are not yet up to your neck in wedding planning and have enough time to learn to dance. Other important organizational things also fall into this period: choosing the wedding clothes, rings and accessories, as well as sending the invitations.

Error 2: Self-testing

If you try to learn a splendid waltz yourself, you may well be one of the 89% who fail miserably at it and bury the dance attempts in strife.
It is important that you contact a dance instructor who, based on their experience, can assess what level you are at and not overstretch your dance potential, but help you find the perfect individual dance for you. Because you can’t possibly be able to learn to dance in just a few weeks the way the pros spend their whole lives trying. Through the dance instructor you can learn to move to the rhythm and feel the music properly, so don’t make the mistake on top of the rest of the wedding stress of trying to do everything yourself, especially not the dancing….

Mistake 3: The wrong music

When choosing the melody for the first wedding dance, many proceed as follows: They search the Internet, reminisce about other first wedding dances and browse their music collection.
These approaches rarely lead to success… A dance instructor can best help you choose the perfect song. You will have to describe to him what you want to convey with the wedding dance, what love story you want to tell the guests….

He can then play you some tunes and you try to dance to them. You’ll find out which song appeals to you the most and which you can move to the best!
Many couples mistakenly assume that the first wedding dance MUST be a waltz! The waltz is, of course, a very beautiful dance, but it is also insanely complicated and not everyone’s cup of tea, because there is the added excitement that makes it hard to concentrate on the circling steps and already the artful dance becomes just a circling hugging movement.
Instead, you should think about what a wide range of dances there are: Maybe a hot tango or a tender rumba can express your love story much better than a waltz?
Also, the wedding immediately becomes much more individual and not so customized.

The length should not exceed 3 to 4 minutes. In this period, as a rule, you do not make mistakes and guests are not bored.

Mistake 4: The first dance becomes a dance for everyone

The first dance is meant for the young couple to dance alone, it is the beginning of the new family. Therefore, you should announce in advance that it will remain with the bride and groom, so that the relatives do not dance along. Unless you want it that way: then the bride can first dance with the father, who will then hand her over to the husband at the appropriate turn of the melody.

Mistake 5: Singing along at the first dance

Even if you know all the words to the song and want to sing along automatically – don’t! Because on the wedding video you will have to laugh. Finally, the first dance is a great moment, which you make a little ridiculous by singing along. Rather look tenderly into each other’s eyes, this is the best way to show off this unique moment! We wish you can avoid these mistakes now and make your first dance a magical moment in your life!
